Review of the Olympus Tough 790SW

New toy. The Olympus Tough 790SW.Fake Purple Flower

I know. I probably should stop buying new toys. But this one is specifically for my trip back to Colombia and of course to get some great shots on NYE. It’ll help photo-journal my 5 week trip, and those drunken moments at Luna Park.

At a promotional price of less than $380 (RRP $499), I was sold. The little extra money for a huge range of durable features, this camera is built to last. Didn’t get raving reviews, but from what I’ve seen so far I believe it’s been underrated.

Highly recommended and no real need to get into detail just yet. Here are the main points:

  • Water Proof 3m
  • Shock Proof 1.5m
  • Face Detection
  • Great range of auto-setting for specific ’scenes’

If you want a long lasting camera, easy to use, and you’re a bit rough with your gear (you’re not alone) then this is definitely a recommendation. Not too bad on price too.

Perhaps the most surprising feature was the great software the camera comes with. No more messy batch reprocesses just to name your pictures something sensible with ease. Also - all the setting you used for each shot are written into the meta data which can be easily read in the software with ease.

My biggest recommendation overall is - GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH ANY CAMERA YOU BUY. I always get my cameras through Harvey Norman for this reason. Extending it for 3 years only cost $59, and is almost guaranteed to pay for itself one day.

The best thing is - with a camera like this, no more silly accidents (dropping in water) should ever affect it, and if it does - I’m covered.
